British Rail or, as it is now known, Network Rail is where FitzSoft Consulting had its beginnings.   Prior to privatization in the mid 1990's, British Rail was the principal passenger and freight services in the UK.   Its I.T. department was spread across four data centers geographically distributed through out the country.

In late 1989 a recruitment effort by this department brought Michael Fitzpatrick into the BR fold in the Crewe data center and so began his programming and business analysis career.
